Visiting your La Grange, IL, dentists, Drs. Carolyn Bronke Wind and Vivian Castellanos, twice a year is an excellent way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. In between visits, following these recommendations will help you reduce your risk of cavities.

Don't go to bed without brushing

Twice-daily brushing decreases the amount of plaque on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque interacts with sugars and carbohydrates in foods to create acids that attack your tooth enamel. Although your tooth enamel is strong, it's no match for acid. If you don't brush morning and night, your risk of tooth decay rises significantly. You'll remove more plaque if you brush for at least two minutes.

Take advantage of enamel-strengthening fluoride

Fluoridated toothpaste offers an important tool in the fight against cavities. The mineral strengthens areas of enamel weakened by acids, stopping cavities from forming. Mouth rinses that offer fluoride provide even more protection.

If you're not sure if a toothpaste contains fluoride, take a close look at the package. You'll see the American Dental Association seal on the box if the product includes the mineral.

Choose healthy snacks

Skip the sugary snacks and drinks and focus on healthier snacks instead, like fruits and vegetables. Apples, carrots, and celery help fill you up and also serve as natural tooth cleaners.

Add sealants to your children's back teeth

Sealants fill in pits and grooves in teeth that collect plaque. They're added to the permanent premolars and molars, the teeth at the very back of the mouth. Although sealants are usually used for children, they can also help adults avoid cavities.

Straighten your teeth

One of the lesser-known benefits of orthodontic treatment is its impact on tooth decay. When your teeth overlap, it's hard to remove plaque, which increases your cavity risk. Straightening your teeth not only improves your appearance and your bite but makes it much easier to get rid of plaque.

See the dentist every six months

During checkups in the LaGrange dental office, you'll receive a checkup and a dental cleaning. The cleaning removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and also gets rid of minor surface stains. When you schedule visits twice a year, any cavities that do develop between appointments will be fairly small and easier to treat.
